Altice: Portugal will receive the longest submarine cable in the Mediterranean

Portugal will be the site of the mooring of another submarine cable. It should be noted that the submarine cable system can represent an impact of up to 500 million euros to Portugal and there is information that in the next three years our country will have more infrastructure.

According to recent information from Altice, Portugal will receive the longest submarine cable in the Mediterranean.

Submarine Cable will have the capacity to 20 Tbps per fiber pair

Altice Portugal and the Medusa submarine cable system, operator of Submarine Infrastructure in the Mediterranean, signed a MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) for the mooring of Medusa in Portugal.

The agreement was signed during the Subsea World 2022 conference in Marseille by the General Director and CEO of AFR-IX Telecom, Norman Albi, and by the COO of Altice Portugal, Alexander Freese.

As revealed, the Carcavelos cable station will be the western point of Medusa's 8,700km routethe longest submarine cable in the Mediterranean, which will link nine countries in Africa and Europe through its mooring points in Portugal, Morocco, Spain, France, Algeria, Tunisia, Italy, Greece, Egypt and Cyprus.

The Medusa project involves a total investment of 326 million euros. The cable, which will be built by Alcatel Submarine Networks (ASN), will have segments that integrate up to 24 fiber pairs with a capacity design of 20 Tbps per fiber pair.

The agreement with Altice Portugal will allow the first segment of Medusa, which connects the station in Carcavelos, Barcelona and Marseille, to become a reality. AFR-IX estimates that the cable will arrive in Portugal during the second quarter of 2024.

In this partnership project with AFR-IX, Altice Portugal will ensure the mooring services, including energy and conduits from the beach to the station; operation and maintenance services, and connectivity between the station and other international reference points in Portugal, namely data centers, other submarine cable stations and teleports.
