After a six-year hiatus from acting, Renée Zellweger returned to the big screen in 2016’s Bridget Jones’ Baby. With the third film, fans finally learned after twelve long years how the story of the lively Bridget continues after “Bridget Jones: Chocolate for Breakfast” (2001) and “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Madness” (2004). But is this the end? There are some indications that the probability is very high that in the future we will also “Bridget Jones 4‘ to be seen on the big screen.

“Bridget Jones 4”: That’s what those responsible say

As early as 2016, director Sharon Maguire, who staged the first and third parts, commented on a possible “Bridget Jones 4”. Speaking to RadioTimes, it’s clear that the filmmaker has plenty of ideas for a sequel:

“There are tons of chapters in Bridget’s life that we haven’t covered. We had Bridget and the menopause or Bridget and the school run [Zeit, in der Eltern die Kinder zur Schule bringen und wieder abholen] not yet. There are still plenty of topics that could be covered. It has always mirrored my own life at every stage of life. And I’m not done yet, so I guess neither is Bridget.”

These statements are very promising. And according to his own statements, Renée Zellweger would also be there when “Bridget Jones 4” comes. She told HeyUGuys in 2019 that she didn’t know if there were talks about a sequel. However, she was the last to know.

“I love the idea of a character that you follow through the development of her life. I love that. […] I love Bridget, I’ve always loved Bridget, even before I was a part of her life. I mean, if that’s something Helen [Fielding] want to do, call me.”

Helen Fielding is the inventor of Bridget Jones. The first two films are based on her books and she sometimes worked as a screenwriter on the third work. She has since published another novel that deals with Bridget Jones’ life. So there is already a story about “Bridget Jones 4”.

There is already a plot for “Bridget Jones 4”.

Helen Fielding published the novel “Bridget Jones: There’s Something About Him” back in 2013 – before “Bridget Jones’ Baby” was released in cinemas, which is why the film is not based on this book. This is due to the lengthy development of the film.

However, “There’s Something About Him” takes place after “Bridget Jones’ Baby”. So it’s safe to assume that it will become the basis for a fourth film if it comes to fruition.

By the way: Helen Fielding has now published a novel version of “Bridget Jones’ Baby” (2016). So “Crazy About Him” is officially the fourth part of the series.

This is what Mad About Him is about

In the fourth volume “Bridget Jones – Mad About Him”, the eponymous heroine has to deal with a tragic stroke of fate: the love of her life, Mark Darcy (played by Colin Firth in the films), dies from a landmine in Sudan. This makes Bridget a single mother of two.

Four years after Mark’s death, she has more or less come to terms with the loss. At the age of 51 she plunges back into dating life. But a lot has changed in the meantime: people are now looking for great love online. Nonetheless, Bridget finds a man she likes. This is much younger than her.

Conclusion: The chances for part 4 are good

Sharon Maguire and Renée Zellweger’s statements are promising and the fact that Helen Fielding has a finished book model gives hope that “Bridget Jones 4” could come. So these three reasons definitely speak for a sequel.

In the meantime, however, almost six years have passed since “Bridget Jones’ Baby”. And still no concrete plans have been made public. Nevertheless, that shouldn’t mean anything, after all, the third part also came twelve years later. The hope for another sequel can therefore remain high.

More movie sequels

Not only “Bridget Jones 4” expect many fans. Could it be that there will also be “Bad Neighbors 3”? And so likely is a sequel to the thriller Gone Girl. This is also already known to “Kingsman 3”.
