Although the focus of the news is not currently the COVID-19 pandemic, the truth is that the numbers continue to rise a lot in our country. Portugal is the EU country with the most new cases and the second in the world.
Mortality from COVID-19 is expected to increase in Portugal in the next 30 days, indicates a report from the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST). Mask should be used whenever there is a risk of contagion.
COVID-19: IST Pandemic Assessment Indicator (IAP) is at 84 points
The document produced by Henrique Oliveira, Pedro Amaral, José Rui Figueira and Ana Serro, who make up this working group coordinated by the president of Técnico, Rogério Colaço, also adds that, with data from May 22, the Pandemic Assessment Indicator ( IAP) of the IST and the Ordem dos Médicos was at 84 points, above the “alarm level”, and could reach 90 points, taking into account the forecasts of hospitalizations.
The IAP combines incidence, transmissibility, lethality and hospitalization in wards and intensive care, presenting two thresholds: the alarm level, when it reaches 80 points, and the critical level, when it reaches 100 points.
According to the report, the use of a mask is therefore recommended at large outdoor mass events, at concerts and events indoors and in a work context, when workers are less than two meters apart.
The IST data also indicate that the average seven-day incidence rose from 14,267 to 27,388, which “is almost certainly due to the abrupt withdrawal of mask use in almost all contexts and to the new BA.5 lineage of the variant Ómicron” that is installed in the country.
The lethality (number of deaths compared to cases of infection) “has been rising since February 6th. It passed in about two months to double the values of February”, currently standing at 0.25%, warns the document, which considers that there is an upward trend in this indicator “due to a decrease in the effect of immunity above 70 years old”. .
