Elon Musk’s Neuralink actually wants to treat people with severe spinal cord injuries and neurological diseases, among other things. To do this, they are testing brain chips on monkeys. In 2022, it was planned to test it on humans for the first time. But now the company is being criticized: 16 of 23 laboratory monkeys are said to have died at Neuralink, the animals are treated badly.

A few months ago, Elon Musk was confident that Neuralink would be able to test chips in human brains as early as 2022. In an interview, he revealed that Neuralink works well in monkeys. Many tests would confirm that. But now the animal protection organization Doctors for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) is suing the company and the US university UC Davis. In particular, laboratory monkeys on which the brain chips were tested died for various reasons.

The PCRM is an organization made up of more than 17,000 doctors. According to her own statements, there are official documents showing that the animals have been mistreated. The documents are 600 pages long.

The Physicians Committee is a non-profit organization headquartered in Washington, DC. For example, the organization is building on a new way of looking at research. Since 1985, the Medical Commission has been campaigning for alternatives to the use of animals in medical teaching and research and for more effective scientific methods. The team consists of doctors, nutritionists and scientists. It works with policy makers, industry, the medical community, the media and the public. It wants to create a better future for people and animals.

Those are the complaints

The committee notes that staff at Neuralink and UC Davis failed to provide adequate medical care to dying monkeys. In addition, an unauthorized substance called “Biologue” was used. This kills monkeys by destroying parts of the brain.

“Macaques used in the experiment were alone in cages, had steel posts screwed to their skulls, suffered ‘facial trauma’, seizures after brain implants, and recurrent infections at the implantation sites.”

In some cases, Neuralink and UC Davis would have euthanized monkeys due to declining health before they could even be used in the planned experiment.

That’s what Elon Musk says

Elon Musk told The Daily Beast when asked: “We don’t do research at UC Davis – it’s an almost entirely federally funded institution. They provide us with a small number of macaque monkeys and we take very good care of them.”

This contradicts the statement by US Davis University. After the activists demanded the release of images and videos of the research work in a legal dispute, the institution refused, according to the PCRM. The university alleges that the “recordings belong to Neuralink, a private company that is not governed by California’s public records law,” according to the PCRM.

In contrast to animal welfare, marketing is top at Neuralink. For example, Elon Musk’s company Neuralink published a video in which a monkey plays pong.
