DG DEFIS is responsible for implementing the EU space programme, which consists of the European Earth Observation Program (Copernicus), the Global Navigation Satellite System (Galileo) and the European Geostationary Navigation Overlay System (EGNOS).

Since early July 2022, Western Europe has been experiencing several large wildfires, fueled by extreme heat waves and pre-existing drought conditions. The total area burned by fire in France, Spain and Portugal in the last 10 days exceeds 40,000 hectares.

The European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), one of the modules of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service, provides daily fire hazard forecasts based on a Fire Meteorological Index (FWI).

As shown in the following image, the EFFIS FWI forecast for today, July 19, 2022, shows 'Extreme Danger' of fire – the highest level of risk on the ECMWF/FWI scale – in Spain, France, Italy and the UK ( Portugal is not included).

More than 50 people were detained this year by the GNR for the crime of forest fire, 20 more than in the same period in 2021, the Minister of Internal Administration revealed today.

The minister also noted that this year more than 500 suspects have been identified for malicious attitudes towards the forest, while in 2021 around 300 were identified.
