The founder and CEO of the online mail order company Amazon, jeff bezos, should be familiar to most people. After Elon Musk, he is the second richest person in the world with a total fortune of around 176 billion US dollars. Only recently did the entrepreneur afford a 127 meter long sailing yacht. The Oceanco Y721 is now causing problems in the port of the Dutch city of Rotterdam.
Jeff Bezos: Mega yacht won’t come out of port
In 1927, the architect Pieter Joosting and his team completed the truss bridge called Königshavenburg (also “De Hef”). It served as a link on the main Rotterdam-Roosendaal-Antwerp-Brussels railway line until it was closed in 1993. Since the new mega yacht of entrepreneur Jeff Bezos does not come out of the port differently, the city now has to dismantle parts of this historic building. Because even with a maximum height of 40 meters, the lift bridge is still too low for the three-master.
“The way the plans look now, the preparation will take about a week,” public broadcaster Rijnmond quoted project manager Marcel Walravens as saying. “De Hef has a lot of cables and as soon as you remove the first cable it stops working. After this week we will remove the middle part and with any luck it will come back a day later. After that, it will take another week to secure everything again.”
criticism on Twitter
As expected, voices criticizing the project were quickly raised on social media. Apart from the lamented disproportionality, the fact that De Hef is a listed building plays a particularly important role for the users. Associated with this: some criticism of capitalism.
