Working or studying are tasks that are increasingly being done from anywhere in the world. Reliable Internet connections, especially in so-called developed countries, are largely responsible for the existence of employment and education solutions that do not force people to stay in one place. But for this to happen, the work machine has to offer features that guarantee high productivity.

Thinking about this increasingly remote world, Huawei has just presented a new laptop that we have already had the opportunity to meet and we want to share some of the first impressions about the Huawei MateBook D 16.

The Huawei MateBook D16 in the notebook market

Huawei introduced two new computers yesterday. We are talking about the Huawei MateBook D 16 and Huawei MateBook 16s models, with the latter appearing as an even more powerful proposal in the segment, compared to the MateBook D 16.

According to the manufacturer, "the new Huawei MateBook D 16 is a reliable companion for the hybrid office and education era, allowing users to unleash their creative power."

But to what extent can this computer contribute to this?

The general specifications

To talk about the MateBook D 16 computer it is necessary to know its details, the first being the fact that it comes equipped with Windows 11 Home. It's not exactly surprising, but when combined with Huawei's exclusive applications, its usefulness and versatility are taken to another level, such as Huawei Share that helps the computer become a Super Device.

It is available with two 12th Gen Intel processor versions, the i5-12450H and i7-12700H, with Intel® UHD Graphics and Intel Iris® Xᵉ Graphics, respectively. The i5 version has 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD, the i7 version is available with 1TB SSD.

The battery is 60Wh and it charges with a 65W charger, just like a smartphone charger, which will make it very easy to carry it in any small pocket of a backpack. The charging cable (which can be used for data transfer) has two USB Type-C plugs. Another particularity is that this charger can even be used to charge any smartphone with SuperCharge, Huawei's fast charging technology present in many of the manufacturer's devices.

construction and design

The Huawei MateBook D 16, being a 16" computer, has a width of 356.7 mm and a depth of 248.7 mm. However, its structure is quite elegant, with a thickness (closed) of only 18.4 mm. , and the cover that houses the monitor is 5mm thick. The weight is 1.7 kg, something I consider normal for the computer we have in hand.

The body is made of metal in the classic "space grey", on top it has the HUAWEI brand inscription with a mirror finish. In the lower area it has rubber pads, for greater safety and comfort while writing, it has the ventilation grille and the speakers. The screws are all accessible, which makes it easy to open for possible interventions.

On the front are 4 microphones that are capable of capturing 360º sound within a maximum radius of 5 meters. This set of microphones also takes advantage of a noise canceling technology, which inhibits, for example, the reproduction of keystrokes during a video conference.

As a user experience note, in fact the range and sound capture is impressive when compared to other similar proposals on the market. We didn't reach the 5 meters indicated in Huawei's lab tests, but at 2 meters the voice sound capture continues with good quality.

The camera, positioned on top of the screen, is 1080p and it is also assisted by "Artificial Intelligence", as it has the ability to follow the person being captured. Basically, you can adjust the viewing angle and change the background of the image being captured, in order to preserve your privacy.

Continuing to look at the computer, on the left there are two USB Type-C ports, the first one for charging, in addition to data transfer, it has an HDMI 2.0 port and a 3.5mm jack input. On the right side there are two USB Type-A ports, one USB 3.2 and the other USB 2.0. Undoubtedly, this amount of ports is an advantage considering the needs of most users, avoiding the need to carry a USB hub in the back.

The Keyboard and Touchpad

These are two fundamental elements in a laptop and Huawei was also very dedicated here.

The Touchpad is positioned more to the left of the structure, with a very generous dimension to work with.

The keyboard, backlit, has a polycarbonate coating that, according to the manufacturer, has several layers of paint, doubling the wear resistance time. For this comparison, the old model MateBook D 15, released in 2021, was used.

The inclusion of a numeric keypad is also an advantage, especially for users who need to create reports, write documents and, of course, enter numeric data.

There is also a power button that includes a fingerprint sensor, a button to activate the camera for increased security and privacy, the quick search key (with virtual assistance, which allows an extended search on the PC, other connected devices or web pages).

The typing distance is only 1.5mm, with a very smooth touch on the keys which also makes typing very fluid and fast.

Connectivity and the Super Device

In addition to the physical connection interfaces already mentioned, the Huawei MateBook D 16 offers 802.11a/b/g/n/ac/ax Wi-Fi connections (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, 2 × 2 MIMO and WPA / WPA2 / WPA ) and also Bluetooth 5.1.

Note that the Wi-Fi antenna integrated in the MateBook D 16 is HUAWEI Metaline, which guarantees greater network stability in poor quality areas. This antenna technology from Huawei improves signal conversion efficiency by 56% and increases network stability and speed in weak signal conditions (such as long distances and multiple walls), according to the company.

This is still a detail that I'll want to test when I'm working away from the office, as the connection here is of excellent quality at any point.

The Super Device (or Super Device) functionality will bring the entire ecosystem of Huawei devices to the PC, making it a true "super device". Basically, through the computer, the user has access to their various equipment. All this management can be done through the Huawei PC Manager app. Please note that this feature is only supported by certain Huawei phones and Huawei laptops with PC Manager 12.0.2 or later.

The screen of the Huawei MateBook D 16

The dimensions and main specifications have already been indicated on the screen. However, there are a few more details worth mentioning.

Firstly, it is important to mention the fact that it occupies 90% of the structure, with very small margins. Unlike many alternatives, the screen has an aspect ratio of 16:10 (the most common being 16:9), which guarantees even more working area.

This monitor also takes advantage of TÜV Rheinland Low Blue Light Certification (Hardware Solution), filters blue light, has direct current dimming, no flickering, therefore making it more comfortable to work with.

The performance - preliminary conclusions

The Huawei MateBook D 16 arrived on Pplware a few days ago, so many performance tests are still running. However, it has been my work machine ever since it arrived at the office.

Huawei is the first to say that this is a machine to work with and that is the primary use it wanted to give it.

A lot of my work is done through the browser, but I also do image editing and these days I even edited a small video, a relatively more demanding task that passed the test with distinction, and I have the version with the Intel Core i7- 12700H.

In any of the other tasks dedicated to work there is also nothing more to say. My usual work computer is also a high performance machine and I haven't noticed any substantial difference with the switch these days, as I expected.

But life is not just work and I took advantage of these days to watch my series of the moment, the last season of Ozark on Netflix, and the image quality is very good considering that it is even a darker series, there could be a risk of miss some details, something that didn't happen.

But it wasn't the image that surprised the most. The sound that is reproduced by the set of speakers is of excellent quality, the treble is heard smoothly, the bass is felt quite intensely, and when the sound is turned up to the maximum there is no distortion, something that tends to happen. with most computers.

price and availability

The Huawei MateBook D 16 is now available for purchase in the two versions indicated, and is available for €979 (i5) or €1299 (i7).

When purchasing this computer, Huawei is currently still offering a HUAWEI Display 23.8" 60 or 75 Hz monitor and 6 months of HUAWEI Care - Screen Protection insurance.

Pplware thanks Huawei for providing the MateBook D 16 computer for testing.
