Influencer with more than 14 million followers is sued by Tesla

THE Tesla China has filed a lawsuit against influencer Xiaogang Xuezhang. The influencer who has about 14 million followers and is seen as a car expert, posted videos on social media alleging malfunctions of the brand’s Model 3, mainly involving the vehicle’s braking system.

According to the website protocol, the company sued the influencer for defamation and falsehood for posting false data regarding security issues related to the electrical model. In April of last year, two videos were published on TikTok, where the expert made a comparison between the Model 3 automatic emergency braking systems and the P7 model, from the Chinese brand XPeng. Xuezhang shows that Tesla’s vehicle system failed twice. Together, the videos received around 500,000 likes before one of them was deleted.

The authenticity of the content was questioned by other influencers and electric car owners of the brand. Many said that Xuezhang could have stepped on the accelerator during testing, causing the model’s automatic emergency braking systems to become clogged and malfunction. Others even commented that the videos posted by the influencer were sponsored by Chinese competitors of Elon Musk’s company, such as XPeng itself.

Last week, Xiaogang Xuezhang responded to the allegations through a video, revealing that he learned of the lawsuit from Chinese media and that he has not received any subpoenas from Tesla’s lawyers. Reinforcing the authenticity of the content published in his profile, Xuezhang said that he is an example of what happens when someone opposes the American brand and has defects involving their vehicles.
