Apple released the beta from iOS15.4 released and the update comes with a particularly important function: The iPhone can also be unlocked with a mask using Face ID.

With iOS 15.4: Face ID function with mask

If you have updated your iPhone to iOS 15.4, you can find the feature under settings: “Face ID & Passcode” and “Use Face ID with a mask”. You can choose which face recognition you want to use to unlock your iPhone in the future: by default or with a mask.

Finally, you no longer have to take off your mask if you want to unlock your Apple smartphone. Note, however, that face recognition with a mask is less reliable than standard recognition. Face ID only recognizes the eyes and does not authenticate the whole face.

How do I set up Face ID with a mask?

If you have updated your iPhone to iOS 15.4, follow these steps:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap on “Face ID & Passcode”.
  3. Type in your passcode to access the menu.
  4. Scroll down to Use Face ID with a mask.
  5. Turn on the feature.

Everyone with glasses is considered

Also new in iOS 15.4 beta is improved recognition for all users who wear glasses. However, it becomes problematic with sunglasses (via GSMArena).

Apart from iOS 15.4 beta, Apple is apparently planning a surprising innovation on the display for the iPhone 15 (Pro). In addition, we can probably expect more from Apple in 2022 than previously assumed.
