Apple wants to expand its Encontro network even in the proximity aspect, when the user takes advantage of the U1 chip for ultra-wideband (UWB) communication. So, as mentioned at last month’s WWDC event, iOS 16 will allow third-party accessories with U1 chip integration to interact with iPhone apps, even when the app is running in the background.

This feature will create innovative hands-free user experiences.

iOS 16 will bring more accessories to make life easier for the user

on one Press releasechipmaker Qorvo said this new feature will allow U1-powered accessories to work together with iOS 16 apps to trigger real-time actions based on your precise location, such as turning on lights or turning on music when you enter a room. , even if you are not actively using the applications at the time.

The company also announced that its Ultra Wideband chips are now certified by the Apple's MFi Program, which should pave the way for MFi U1-certified third-party branded accessories. Accessory manufacturers can use Qorvo chips to create accessories compatible with U1-equipped iPhone and Apple Watch models.

Apple's own accessories deliver precise, driving-aware experiences. For example, users can hold a U1-equipped iPhone close to a HomePod mini to "take care" of music playback, with visual, sound, and tactile effects.

iPhones equipped with the U1 can take advantage of the feature to activate the precision search that makes it easier to find an AirTag, as shown in the image at the top right.

Embedded in iPhone 11 and newer models, Apple Watch Series 6 and newer models, HomePod mini, and AirTag, Apple's U1 chip utilizes Ultra Wideband technology for ultra-precise spatial awareness at close ranges.

More details are available on the page Nearby Interactions with U1 on the Apple development site.
