Since time immemorial, humanity has been looking for a magic formula to stay young and eternal. Some people find in art or in great deeds before society a way to become immortal. Others, through their faith, build the belief that there is an afterlife. But some, with many resources, try to find eternal life through science. And in that last group where the billionaire is, Jeff Bezos.

Founder of amazon and one of the pioneers in space tourism, now Jeff Bezos – one of the richest men in the world – will invest in research aimed at finding the formula for immortality.

A future with eternal youth?

Altos Labs is a startup that is starting work and aims to develop cellular reprogramming techniques in order to fight diseases and increase human life expectancy. And Jeff Bezos is one of the founders of this startup. In addition to Bezos, Russian-Israeli billionaire Yuri Milner is another investor in Altos Labs.

According to the startup, these researches can help end diseases related to aging, such as Alzheimer’s and cancer. And to put this project into practice, a strong team was chosen to spearhead this endeavor.

  • Hal Barron, head of pharmaceutical research and development GSK and former head of research and development at Calico LLCwill be the startup’s CEO;
  • David Baltimore, winner of the 1975 Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine;
  • Frances Arnold, won the 2018 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for work on enzyme engineering;
  • Jennifer Doudna, co-winner of the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for her role in the development of the gene editing tool CRISPR;
  • Shinya Yamanaka, winner of the 2012 Nobel Prize in Physiology/Medicine for stem cell research.

Research focuses on cellular reprogramming. By controlling this technique, it will be possible to better understand the aging process of the human body and thus be able to stop or even reverse it. All this based on the techniques developed by Shinya Yamanaka, which applied to this research will make it possible to repair tissues and reverse cellular aging.

It is clear from the work of Shinya Yamanaka, and many others since their initial discoveries, that cells have the ability to rejuvenate themselves by resetting their epigenetic clocks and erasing the damage from a multitude of stressors. These insights, combined with major advances in several transformative technologies, have inspired Altos to reimagine medical treatments where disease reversal for patients of any age is possible.“, Barron said in a statement.

Although research is still taking place at the laboratory level and with animals – with no plans to start human trials -, with this dream team science and billion-dollar investments, progress can be much faster than we think.
