Apple has sought to give its users maximum security and privacy, both on the iPhone and on its other devices. It uses various ways to achieve this and always resorts to very intelligent mechanisms.

With iOS 16 already on the way, Apple has some more news in this field of protection. It’s called Lockdown Mode and it wants to bring full security to iPhone and other devices.

Even more security for the iPhone

The recent cases of security problems that Apple has suffered show how simple it can be to attack these systems. NSO Group's Pegasus was one of the worst cases and paved the way for many problems.

To combat such cases and avoid problems in the future, Apple now brought something new for iOS 16. Lockdown Mode wants to guarantee total protection and give the user a tool to defend himself at any time and in any situation.

What will Lockdown Mode bring?

With this mode, the user disables several features or restricts access to other options, blocking himself. In this way, protection is guaranteed. At launch, Lockdown Mode includes the following protections:

  • Messages: most types of message attachments, except images, are blocked. Some features such as link previews are disabled.
  • Web Browsing: Certain complex web technologies, such as just-in-time (JIT) JavaScript compilation, are disabled unless the user excludes a trusted site from Blocking Mode.
  • Apple Services: Incoming invitations and service requests, including FaceTime calls, are blocked if the user has not previously sent a call or request to the initiator.
  • Wired connections to a computer or accessory are blocked when iPhone is locked.
  • Configuration profiles cannot be installed and the device cannot register with mobile device management (MDM) while lock mode is enabled.

With these protections, iPhone and other devices are safe and out of trouble. It will be the user to activate it whenever he feels threatened or needs additional security.

How can you activate this novelty from Apple

As we said before, the use of Lockdown Mode is optional and will have to be activated manually. It is a simple and fast process, which then guarantees the total protection of users.

  1. Open the Settings app on iOS 16 or System Preferences on macOS Ventura and choose Privacy & Security
  2. At the bottom of this menu, click on Block Mode
  3. You can now read more about this new security system before activating the
  4. Finally, click on Turn On & Restart

For now it's only in iOS 16 beta, as well as iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura, but Apple will likely put it in the final version. To make Lockdown Mode even stronger, Apple has brought in more than $10 million to security researchers who detect issues in these areas.
