MediaTek launches Kompanio 1380 chip aimed at Chromebooks

MediaTek announced this week the launch of its new Kompanio 1380 chip geared towards Chromebooks. The new chip was produced with the 6nm manufacturing process, has eight cores and promises high performance without negatively impacting the battery.

As mentioned above, MediaTek’s new chip has eight cores, with four high-performance ARM Cortex-A78 cores clocked up to 3GHz and four ARM Cortex-A55 cores clocked up to 2GHz. In addition, it features ARM Mali-G57 GPU with five cores for a richer experience for users and gamers.

Still on the GPU of the new chip, it supports video encoding with H.264 (AVC) and H.265 (HEVC) codecs and video decoding based on H.264, H.265, VP-9 and AV1. The Kompanio 1380 chip also supports RAM memory based on the LPDDR4x standard and storage based on the Universal Flash Storage (UFS), eMMC and NVMe standards.

MediaTek’s new chip for Chromebooks comes with the MediaTek APU 3.0 AI accelerator, which works together with the devices’ cameras and microphones for a better experience, supports devices with Full HD+ (2520 x 1080), 2.5K screen resolutions (2560 x 1600) and 4K or Ultra HD (3840 x 2160), refresh rates up to 120Hz and HDR, includes an audio digital signal processor (DSP) that supports a variety of voice assistants and supports devices with up to two cameras of 16MP.

The MediaTek Kompanio 1380’s connectivity options include support for Wi-Fi 6/6E, Bluetooth 5, PCI Express 3.0, USB 3.2 Gen 1, and for GPS, Glonass, BeiDou, Galileo, and QZSS location services.

MediaTek has confirmed that Chromebooks equipped with the Kompanio 1380 chip will hit the market soon and the first of them is the Acer Chromebook Spin 513 (CP513-2H)regarded as the first “premium” Chromebook certified by Google.
