Nanoleaf is retiring the product that made it a household name. Starting today, you can no longer purchase Rhythm Light Panels starter kits from company website. in a video this uploaded to youtube, Nanoleaf said it now considers the device a legacy product. It notes that it will continue to support Light Panels in its mobile app “forever” or “for a long, long, long time.”
In practice, this means you can continue to use blocks in conjunction with Nanoleaf’s group feature, allowing you to sync them with your current and future lights. A spokesperson for Nanoleaf told Ploonge that the company will not be updating the device with new features, but has future firmware updates planned. “Technology is always advancing and we want to offer the best we can, but since light panels have older technology (created before Thread), they will not be able to support Thread,” they said.
If you need replacement parts for your tiles, Nanoleaf will offer them until the end of 2023. If you want to expand your current configuration, the company has discounted expansion packs by 30% and accessories by 50% while supplies last. As you can imagine, not everyone is happy with the news.
“This is a mistake,” reads one of the comments on the video that the company released. “All Nanoleaf needed to do was release an updated controller that supported Thread to help with connection issues.” In both the video and its website, Nanoleaf says part of the reason it is retiring the Light Panels is that it thinks it has found a suitable successor in its new Shapes line.
