Reaching space, either physically or by working on Earth to create structures to reach it, are scenarios that require a high investment both personally and financially, immediately removing a high potential workforce in the area. NASA, which is the great reference in this subject, intends, however, to make space more accessible to all, reducing inequalities and increasing opportunities.

This idea is part of the space agency’s Equity Action Plan.

NASA's Equity Action Plan

integrated into your Equity Action Plan, NASA intends to create more space-related opportunities. This means that the US federal government agency wants to work with underserved and underrepresented communities, with the broad goal of improving racial equality in the country.

The agency says its Plan will allow for internal and external monitoring of progress in improving diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility.

There are four key areas it focuses on. First, there is the ambition to increase the integration and utilization of contractors and companies from underserved communities and to expand equity in the NASA hiring process.

Another measure involves polishing the way in which subsidies are awarded and cooperation agreements created to promote opportunities, access and representation for needy communities.

There is still a need to leverage Earth science and socio-economic data to help mitigate environmental challenges in underserved communities. Finally, the promotion and expansion of civil rights to these groups is highlighted.

To reach this population, NASA plans to hold more events to engage these groups, increasing outreach and education, and offering small businesses more contract opportunities. The agency also aims to break down language barriers by updating its language access plan and expanding accessibility to populations with limited English proficiency, starting with communications in Spanish.

NASA has plans to put people on the moon again in 2025 and, through the Artemis program, wants to take the first woman and a black person to step on the moon for the first time, with a diverse list of names eligible to do so.
