In just over two years, the world of Middle-earth will return to the big screen. As Variety reports, The War of the Rohirrim is slated to hit theaters on April 12, 2024. The animated film is set to take place approximately two centuries before the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.
In the summer of 2021, just in time for the 20th anniversary of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Warner Bros. Animation and New Line Cinema announced a new feature film set in the world of JRR Tolkien (1873-1973). The production companies were already responsible for the two great trilogies “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit”.
The Story of The War of the Rohirrim
“The War of the Rohirrim” takes place in the kingdom of Rohan, more precisely at the fortress of Helm’s Deep. Fans know: At this point in “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” there is a gigantic battle between the heroes around Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen, 62) and the orc armies of the evil wizard Saruman. The new film focuses on Helm Hammerhand, the ninth king of Rohan. He wages a war against the wild Dunlendings.
With Philippa Boyens (60), a screenwriter of the two classic film trilogies, is available as a consultant for “The War of the Rohirrim”. Otherwise, mainly fresh forces are entrusted with the prequel. Kenji Kamiyama (55), an established anime director, is directing.
Amazon Prime Video’s Lord of the Rings series is also taking shape. The first teaser for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has just been released. The series is set even further in Middle-earth’s past than The War of the Rohirrim.
