Taking photos or videos, posting them and getting likes while looking into the lives of others – that’s how it could be done Instagram roughly describe. The social network is widespread and extremely popular. But operator Meta came under criticism because the use of the platform has negative effects, especially on young people – and the company even knew it itself. Now it has introduced a seemingly tiny change that hardly anyone has noticed until now.
Instagram: minimum time increased
According to a report by TechCrunch, the change affects the monitoring of your own screen time on Instagram. In 2018, Meta (then Facebook) introduced a new tool that allows you to see your usage time. In addition, a time limit can be set for how long you want to spend with the app at most. The group also introduced this option directly on Facebook. The minimum duration that could be set so far was ten minutes for Instagram before users are advised to better close the application. It’s five minutes on Facebook.
But surprisingly, Meta has now corrected that number upwards. Instead of ten, you can now only set a minimum of 30 minutes on Instagram before the warning pops up. The maximum is three hours. On Facebook, on the other hand, nothing has changed. There is no official explanation for this decision, but there is speculation that it could have something to do with poor company numbers.
It is also unclear whether and to what extent this option is actually used by users. Irrespective of this, an increase in the minimum time seems questionable against the background that the opposite should actually be the right way. After all, Instagram is considered toxic.
Instagram Screentime: How to set it
If you also have the impression that you are spending too much time on Instagram, you should set up the warning. It’s very simple: First go to your profile.
Tap the three lines in the top right, then tap Your Activity. At the top is the Time Spent field that you tap on. Now you can see your daily average and other options. On the one hand, you can set reminders for breaks from ten to a maximum of 30 minutes. With “Set daily time limit” you can set your own time limits. Tap on it, choose your limit, and “Done”.
