After some time of debate, the telephone operators ATT and verizon will debut the 5G network in the United States – but with some restrictions. Activation will delay some airports in the region to lessen the concern of airlines.
Some time ago, we reported that there was a concern related to possible interference from 5G frequencies in flight instruments, such as radio altimeters. Several planes and some helicopters would not be able to use automatic and guided landing systems, which are designed for use in low visibility landing, reliably if there is a certain level of 5G interference.
Airline directors also warned of the potential “chaos” the activation would cause, calling for the intervention of the FAA, the United States Federal Aviation Administration, to avoid “an operational disruption to passengers, transport workers, supply and delivery of essential medical goods”.
So far, the FAA has validated the use of some altimeter models and given the go-ahead to 48 of the 88 North American airports that would theoretically be most at risk of interference. Some restrictions were imposed in some cases.
On the side of telephone operators, AT&T decided, for example, not to activate towers installed in a perimeter of 3.2 km around the specified airports. However, there is a frustration, as the activation of 5G bands would be scheduled for at least two years and has already been postponed at least twice.
“We are frustrated with the FAA’s inability to do what nearly 40 countries have done, which is to safely activate 5G technology without disrupting air services.” – ATT.

US President Joe Biden thanked AT&T and Verizon for the decision in a statement. So far, we don’t know for how long this activation will be delayed or what solutions will be thought of to the interference problems at airports. Under the initial plan, activation across the country would take place today, January 19th.
