Around two months before the 94th Academy Awards ceremony on March 27, 2022, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that 276 works are in the running for the award for “Best Picture”. Among the films are, among others, “Being the Ricardos”, “Belfast”, “Don’t Look Up”, “Encanto”, “The Harder They Fall”, “House of Gucci”, “In the Heights”, “King Richard”, “The Power of the Dog”, “Spencer”, “Spider-Man: No Way Home”, “West Side Story” and many more.
The selection of the jury will take place from January 27th to February 1st, the final selection of the nominated films will be announced on February 8th. In 2021, the Academy had extended the application window to February 28 due to the Covid 19 pandemic; this year it was shortened to ten months.
German film shortlisted for “International Feature Film”
The Academy had already announced its shortlists in ten categories in December 2021, on which two Germans made it. In the “International Feature Film” category, director Maria Schrader (56) competes against 14 other nominated films with her tragic comedy “I am your human”. The German composer Hans Zimmer (64) made it onto the shortlist twice with his compositions for the science fiction drama “Dune” and for the James Bond film “No time to die”.
