THE Panasonic decided to adopt the four-day working week, proposed by the Japanese Government in 2021, in its domains. According to the newspaper Nikkei, the company’s goal is to give workers more time to pursue personal goals. Each operating company must decide what the details of implementing the extra day off measure will look like.

“We must support the well-being of our employees”, argued the group’s president and CEO, Yuki Kusumi to investors in a briefing, according to Nikkei.

The measure of Panasonic is in agreement with the local government, which in last year’s annual economic policy guidelines recommended the adoption of four-day workweeks for employees who were interested. Those responsible for the guidance claim that the measure can bring several benefits, such as encouraging workers to invest extra time in improving the educational level, for example.

Gradual adoption of measures

About 8% of Japanese companies offer the shortest working week to employees, is what a survey of the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, held in 2020. But, after government guidance, it is possible that the number will increase.

The report of Nikkei states that Encourage Technologies, a Japanese systems development company, has already joined the practice in 2021. “Younger workers value their free time, so that gives us an edge when it comes to hiring”, justified the company.

According to the newspaper, there is an effort on the part of the State to change the work culture, which is classified as quite demanding. The shorter working week is a measure that also aims to achieve this objective, but it comes up against logistical problems and difficulties in approaching each case.
