Portugal: 4 out of 10 cars sold are electric

The electric car market has been growing a lot. Nowadays there are vehicles for almost every budget and the charging ecosystem has also grown significantly.

According to the most recent figures, electric cars are already the second best sellers in Portugal.

Sales of electric or hybrid cars rose more than 18%
The data are from Portuguese Automobile Association which show a sharp drop in the sale of diesel cars.  Currently, of every 10 new cars sold in the country, almost four are electric, hybrid or plug-in, which represent more than 38% of total sales.
Between January and July, more than 106 thousand new cars were sold, almost 6% less than in the same period last year.  In contrast, sales of electric or hybrid cars rose more than 18% in the same period.
In July 2022, 16,897 motor vehicles were registered by the legal representatives of the brand operating in Portugal, that is, 18.8 percent more than in the same month of 2021, but 22.5 percent less when compared to July 2019.
In the seven months of 2022, 106,879 new vehicles were put into circulation, which represented a decrease of 5.9 percent compared to the period from January to July 2021 and a decrease of 38.0 percent compared to the same period in 2019.

Tesla, Peugeot, BMW and Hyundai are the brands that have sold the most 100% electric cars in Portugal since the beginning of this year.
Since the beginning of the war, car sales have dropped in Portugal and have not yet recovered.  The low demand falls mainly on combustion cars, that is, gasoline or diesel.  However, 100% electric or hybrid cars have seen sales increase.
