Telecommunications services have evolved significantly in Portugal. Operators have made large investments and that is why Portugal is one of the countries that offers the best service.
According to ANACOM – Autoridade Nacional das Comunicações, high-speed services at a fixed location are subscribed by 80.7% of families.
Portugal: Number of households cabled with optical fiber is 5.8 million
In the 1st quarter of 2022, the number of residential customers of high-speed services at a fixed location in Portugal reached 3.4 million, 7.6% more than in the same period of the previous year (9.4% in the 1st quarter of 2021). It should be noted that around nine out of ten new high-speed network customers contracted a service supported by fiber optic networks (FTTH).
Around 80.7% of families had subscriptions to high-speed services at a fixed location. In the regions of Lisbon (94.7%), Azores (89.7%) and Madeira (88.5%) penetrations were above average. In turn, the Algarve (80.7%), North (77.1%), Center (72.0%), and Alentejo (62.9%), regions where the penetration of these services is lower, grew above the national average.
It is estimated that at least around 5.9 million households were cabled with a high-speed network, 2.9% more than in the same quarter of the previous year. The growth recorded was lower than that recorded a year ago (5.2% year-on-year). The coverage of high-speed networks was 92.5%, 2.8 percentage points (pp) more than in the same period in 2021.
In Portugal, the number of households cabled with optical fiber (FTTH - Fiber to the Home) amounted to around 5.8 million, 4.4% more than in the same period last year, reaching a coverage of 90.4%.
The number of cabled households with high-speed accesses supported by cable TV networks (HFC - Hybrid Fiber Coaxial) decreased by 0.4% compared to the same quarter of the previous year, totaling 3.7 million. The coverage of this type of networks was 57.4%.
