Social networks today offer simple channels of communication between users. These channels support the most diverse types of content, but are also used to pass on malware and fraudulent schemes.

If you received a strange link from a friend on Messenger, don’t open it! However, you can always try to understand what the purpose of the link is.

These days there have been some reports of users who have received strange links in their communication channels. There are those who complain that, after clicking, they become infected, others indicate that the link serves as a referral to shopping sites, etc.

Where does the link take me in Messenger?

If you are suspicious of the link sent to you via Messenger, it is best not to click. However, being curious, you will want to know for sure if you ran the link what would happen. One of the procedures you can do is to check if the link is associated with some type of malware. For this, you can use the Virustotal tool for this purpose.

On the Virustotal page, just choose URL and enter the URL in question.

Another of the actions that we can take is to know where "takes us", the link. Using services like CheckShortURL, just put the address and see which page or file may be associated with it. As you can see in the following example, the link shared in one of the Messenger windows takes us to an Amazon page.

These are some tips that you can use to understand what the content of a link is. Obviously, if you don't know the origin or the link seems strange to you, it's best to ignore it. Surely if it's something important your friend will send the information again.
