More and more critics agree that Netflix could have won the big Oscar this year with the unusual western “The Power of the Dog”. Is the streaming service presenting the Academy Award winner in the “Best Picture” category for the first time? This is supported by the fact that the strip by Jane Campion (67) and starring Benedict Cumberbatch (45) broke an internal record.

According to Variety, “The Power of the Dog” has already received 21 “Best Film” awards at various award ceremonies – including the 2022 Golden Globes. That’s more than any other Netflix production to date. The previous record holder was Alfonso Cuarón’s (60) drama “Roma” with 20 of these awards. However, the film did not use it at the Oscars 2019 – in the end the controversial choice fell on “Green Book – A Special Friendship”.

Does the game continue?

A year later, Netflix also lost out to “Parasite” with “The Irishman”, as well as with “Mank” against “Nomadland” at the last Oscar ceremony to date. It shouldn’t be a sure-fire success at the upcoming Academy Awards on March 27th either. The nominations will not be officially announced until February 8th. In addition to “The Power of the Dog”, Kenneth Branagh’s (61) semi-autobiographical drama “Belfast” is likely to be a major competitor.
