Emojis, like many other technologies, have conquered our daily lives and are yet another form of expression. These allow, in a simple and fast way, to show an emotion or a reaction, which everyone easily understands.

To commemorate its existence and usefulness, World Emoji Day is celebrated today. Come and find out which are the most used in Portugal, in different categories.

Today, July 17th, is World Emoji Day. It may just be a symbolic date, but it strongly marks the presence of these symbols in our daily lives, in an increasing way.

Emojis are an immediate way to color any message exchange and to delegate responsibility for conveying thoughts and emotions that are sometimes difficult to put into words. To celebrate the date, Meta revealed which emojis are, in version 14.0 - the most updated version - most used in Portugal 🇵🇹.

Right now, the most used emoji in Portugal on Facebook is "Heart Hands". These are the five most used emojis from version 14.0 in Portugal, on Facebook:

  1. Heart Hands;
  2. Face with a peeking eye;
  3. Face holding back tears;
  4. Face with open eyes and covering the mouth (Face with open eyes and hand over mouth);
  5. Saluting face;

Foodies can't help but share what they're eating and drinking through emojis. Meta also reveals the most used emojis in Portugal related to drink and food, now focused on Instagram:

  1. Birthday cake (Birthday cake);
  2. Toast with flutes (Clinking glasses);
  3. Bottle with a popping cork;
  4. Hot beverage;
  5. Slice of cake (Shortcake);

The Instagram profile description is the gateway to every new friendship on the social network, with emojis representing each one's interests. Finally, these are the most used sports emojis in Instagram profile descriptions:

  1. Soccer ball (Soccer ball);
  2. Basketball (Basket ball);
  3. Person lifting weights (Person Lifting Weights);
  4. Person in Lotus Position (Person in Lotus Position);
  5. Volleyball (Volley ball);

Their importance has grown and services are increasingly focused on their use and presence. An example of this was the recent announcement made by the CEO of Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, that it is now possible to react with any emoji on WhatsApp. At that time, he also shared some of his favorite emojis.
