In the USA, the car manufacturer based there must Tesla currently recall hundreds of thousands of vehicles. According to the current status, the models 3, S and Y are affected. This message also did not go past the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). Since the company from Palo Alto, California has not yet started a corresponding recall campaign in this country, the authorities set a deadline for it – it ends on Friday.
Tesla: KBA is setting an ultimatum
The Dutch counterpart to the KBA, the RDW, has already ordered the affected vehicles to be recalled. This makes it clear that margins in the USA are not exclusively affected by the errors. However, the decision of the Department of Road Transport does not only affect the Netherlands. The RDW is responsible for the approval of Tesla models throughout the European Union. The problem: In Germany, the warning about the potentially dangerous vehicles of the Tesla brand did not initially arrive.
According to information from the world, the Dutch warn: inside in the event of three defects of “traffic accidents with personal injury”. On the Tesla Model 3, for example, the wiring of the rear view camera could be damaged if the tailgate is opened and closed. A fault in the secondary locking of the front trunk of the Model S could in turn cause the hood to open while driving. On Model Y, there is a problem with the front and rear suspensions. In the worst case, they could deform or even loosen.
The EU Commission usually provides information about such “dangerous products” in the context of so-called RAPEX notifications. So far, however, the warnings from the RDW have not appeared in the database provided for them. “A twisted curtain side airbag [beim Model 3] may not be triggered properly in the event of a collision, which could increase the risk of being thrown out or injuring the occupants, ”the KBA warns, however, in its in-house recall database, for example. Tesla still has time to get active until Friday. Then the authority intervenes itself.
Few vehicles affected
In Germany, the number of affected vehicles is extremely low. Nevertheless, it is important to be attentive. If you drive a Tesla Model 3, S, or Y, it can’t hurt to keep up to date with the recall. As early as December 2021, the KBA warned of “incorrectly screwed chassis components” and the resulting “loss of driving stability”.
