Despite the skepticism of many, cultured meat could be the solution to the well-known problem of raising livestock for consumption. With this in mind, the United States of America (USA) is building the world’s largest meat-growing facility.
Good Meat is responsible for this colossal project.
Although the Food and Drug Administration has not yet approved public consumption of this type of meat, according to the The GuardianGood Meat is already building facilities to produce cultured meat - facilities that will be the largest in the world in this sector.
According to data from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, cattle for meat and milk production are responsible for 65% of emissions corresponding to cattle. More than that, it contributes 14.5% to global carbon emissions, with 7.1 gigatons annually.
Aware of the negative impact of animal meat consumption, there are more than 150 companies committed to producing an alternative. Cultured meat could be a food source to consider as it involves fewer resources and drastically reduces emissions.
Meat farming could be the solution to overexploitation
The method chosen for artificial production has been similar to that used by the biopharmaceutical industry to produce drugs and even vaccines. In the case of meat, as we have already seen, the cells of the animal are used, and it is not necessary to kill it.
Now, the laboratories use a bioreactor where cells from cell banks of livestock animals can be grown. This bioreactor provides all the nutrients, as well as all the conditions, necessary for healthy growth. Once they reach a certain stage, the cells can be harvested.
In addition to guaranteeing the presence of nutrients, companies have been working to ensure verisimilitude between the appearance and taste of the cultivated and the animal. As it is still recent, the values are not high, therefore, companies like good meat intend to gather conditions to produce on a large scale and offer more appealing prices.
For this, Good Meat will install 10 bioreactors with a capacity of 250,000 liters. This equipment is currently being built by ABEC, which has extensive experience in biopharmaceuticals. The company that will open the world's largest cultured meat production facility says the exact location will be chosen within three months, and from then on, they can start installing the bioreactors.
At the outset, in 2024, everything will be operational and 11,800 tons of meat will be produced per year until 2026, with an increase to 13,700 by the end of the decade.
