What is a car’s VIN number and what is it used for?

There are several indicators that provide a set of information, but sometimes we do not know their meaning. Did you know that your vehicle has a “Vehicle Identification Number”, also known as a VIN or simply Chassis number?

What information does this VIN number give us?

How to know the history of a car? The “Vehicle Identification Number” (VIN) can help. The VIN number of a vehicle is an alphanumeric code that has a total of 17 digits that allow you to know the history of a car.

With this number it is possible to know the number of kilometers, the year of production and the market for which the vehicle is intended, as well as the type of engine, the number of incidents, or even production problems identified by the brand.

The attribution of a VIN number of a vehicle by the manufacturer is mandatory for the vehicle to be driven.

What information can we get from the VIN number?

The VIN number is divided into three distinct parts:

  • First 3 characters: WMI (World Manufacturer Identifier) ​​– Manufacturer identification.
  • From 4th to 11th character: the DVS, which identifies the characteristics of the car

    • 7 - Bodywork
    • 8 - Engine (number of cylinders or displacement).
    • 9 - Brand confirmation code
    • 10 - identifies the year of production

Using this car number, there are several websites that allow you to obtain various information, such as:

  • Information about damage and collisions;
  • Vehicle chronology;
  • km from the vehicle;
  • Validation in databases of stolen vehicles;
  • Technical Data.

The new Documento Único Automóvel, also known as DUA, came to replace the documents booklet and title of property registration. This document also identifies a vehicle and allows driving in European Union countries.

The DUA is now issued in a polycarbonate card format, with smaller dimensions, similar to the Citizen Card in August 2019.

The Documento Único Automóvel/registration certificate is issued when:

  • buy a car
  • changes the owner's details (if ownership is transferred to another person or company, or if address or registered office is changed)
  • changes the car's characteristics (paint color, tire profile)
  • wants to replace the documents and title deed of property registration
