With over 50 million downloads via Google’s Play Store and an average rating of 4.5 stars (almost 730,000 reviews), it seems at first glance to do what it is intended for. Due to the encryption, the app is not able to access texts and media directly. However, by reading the associated notifications that you have received each time over time, it is intended to create a backup of WhatsApp messages that have already been deleted.
However, as Information Security Newspaper reported back in 2019, you may have a major problem with WAMR precisely because of this approach of the app. Because although this is not a malicious application in the traditional sense, you are unknowingly putting your privacy at risk.
Therefore WAMR is of concern
As the experts at the International Institute of Cyber Security (IICS) emphasize, anyone who wants to use WAMR must agree to massive access. These could compromise the data processed by other applications.
This includes, among other things, files stored in the memory, your own Internet search history or contact lists. In addition to access to the device memory, further access requests with later updates are also possible. If you want to use the WhatsApp trick, you should be aware of the consequences.
